Der BMW E12 mit großer Klappe, © auto motor und sport 8/1975
The factory Karosseriefabrik und Pumpenbau GmbH Conrad Pollmann from Bremen offered a special modification. The car magazine auto motor und sport wrote an article in 1975. The trunk door was take from a Ford Capri Mark II. Two gas-filled telescopic struts avoid, that the door falls down. In the report they wrote, that a stowable rear bench should be orderable. The costs for the modificaton were DM 5,000. For the money you got a lot of space, but at the expense of the nice shape.
In the year 2002 I had the oppertunity to visit the sedan, which was shown in the report. This special car was for sale at that time. The first owner had a TV sale and repair company. The big TVs don't fit easily in the BMW 5 Series. After a rear accident he had the idea, to get his car modified. From that on TVs could be transported without problems.

Two pictures, which were taken short after the modification, still survived. The body modification was mentioned in the license papers.
The times didn't passed the car without leaving one's mark. Not only from outside also from inside the car suffered. The frequently use as a monkey was recogizable. If you come closer to the car you see some interesting details. The rear of the car wasn't covered from inside. That gives us a possibility to see how the modification was made. If you have a look at the surface of the paintwork, you see the weld spots. The rear bench was static at that car
Shortly after I took the pictures the car was sold. Maybe someone took the challenge an restored the special car.
